Here in San Antonio, we are taking in as many as we can give aid to...started arriving Friday, lots of folks yesterday, and are expecting many many more. Instead of reading and weeping yesterday, as I have been all week, I started calling around town to see who was taking donations and what they needed. Loaded up at Costco and dropped donations off at the SPCA, Girls and Boys Town, and SA FoodBank. It wasn't a lot, but damn, in the short term it will help. And over the long term,
these orgs will need more help.

The organizer at the Girls and Boys Town said that they don't know how long the LA kids will be there, but some have not been able to reach family members since they evacuated. I got to meet some of the kids -- they all came right up and intro'd themselves and said thank you. They'll need help with organization next week and folks to help prepare meals.
I've read some other threads where folks say they don't want to give to the Red Cross b/c of the fiasco with letting them in to help people in N.O., rumors that they're pulling out of the Astrodome, etc. So instead, why don't you go directly to the local orgs who will directly benefit the evacuees in these cities? Here's a list for San Antonio. The SA FoodBank even has a paypal accnt set up.
