Today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, 65 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR), expressed their opposition to the reinstatement of the 1994 ban on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines. These congressmen cited studies that proved the 1994 ban was ineffective, and they strongly urged Attorney General Holder to stop his effort and instead focus on the enforcement of existing gun laws
Rep. Ike Skelton & Senators Max Baucus, Jon Tester & Mark Begich also sent similar letters. I name all 65 below the fold
This is kinda old news, mid march, I’m surprised w/ all the passions of the ‘Grabbers’ & the ‘Nutz’ here, that no one has taken the time to diary this important development. The gun blogs are STUNNED that gun friendly Dems actually EXSIST. The NRA is gonna have to find another boogey man stereo type to maintain their empire.
1st, a Hat TIP to wmtriallawyer
Whose recent excellent diary http://www.dailykos.com/...
argued that reinstatement of a new AWB should not hurt dems chances of reelection? I recommend his diary & esp. the many comments for a primer on so called ‘assault weapons’.
69 elected Dems apparently STRONGLY disagree w/ his premise. Are they ‘tools of the gun manufacturers’, are they just voting to ‘represent their districts’, do they actually have any values they will fight for? Who knows... why not put the question to someone who’s recently flip flopped on this issue. SEN Gillibrand?
I started ‘collecting names’, of gun friendly democrats (something my ‘nuttier’ friends assure me are a figment of my naive imagination) when the DC voting rights bills were up for consideration, those bills, overturning DC’s oppressive gun laws, were, at some point, supported by 22 Dem senators & 85 Democratic representatives. I wish there was a final vote. Sounds like some politicians might be posturing... aka "all hat & no cattle"
Ike Sketlon’s (MO) letter here

Montana Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Jon Tester (D-MT) sent a joint letter to AG Eric Holder
http://baucus.senate.gov/...
Mark Begich (D-AK) tells AG to back off
Begich's letter follows a similar message from two other Western Democratic senators: Max Baucus and Jon Tester of Montana. The letters were prompted by Holder's recent comment that reinstating a ban on the sale of assault weapons could help reduce bloodshed in Mexico, where 6,000 people were killed last year in drug-related violence.

These politicians basically argue that
"The banned weapons and magazines were never used in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders."
and
The gun grabber community has intentionally misled most Americans into believing that these weapons are fully automatic machine guns
So how would a new AWB affect me?
If, i ever get 'nutty' enought to want to
buy the type of assault weapons used in Mumbia, they would still be perfectly 100% legal, the ban just makes newly manufactured ones illegal, and hence, the older, preexisting ones much MUCH more expensive!
I have a few high capacity magazines that came w/ the (2) handguns when I purchased them. A copy of the sales receipt in a safety deposit box? That still doesn’t PROVE they came w/ the gun... overzealous prosecutors?...
yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist
Hell, just ask Ted Stevens or Don Siegelman
Final note of trivia
The Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008 was sponsored by five Republicans
Sponsor:
Rep. Mark Kirk [R-IL]
Cosponsors
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen [R-FL]
Rep. Michael Ferguson [R-NJ]
Rep. Christopher Shays [R-CT]
Rep. Michael Castle [R-DE]
How’d that work out for them?
Anyway... I don’t have much to add that hasn’t already been re-repeated somewhere here before, except that if U really wanta do something about gun violence, I’d suggest you try to do something about stolen guns & the drug wars, that’s where most of the problem lies.
Heres the list, check your district, PLEASE let them know how much you love/hate them.
