Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, one of the biggest Democratic rising stars in the country, is running for the U.S. Senate, for the seat currently occupied by human comedy routine Jim Bunning.
From a Conway press release:
I wanted you to be among the first to know that I am running to represent you in the United States Senate, and I would be honored to have your support. Please click here to view a special video message announcing my candidacy.
I love being your Attorney General, and I’m proud of my record of accomplishment. Working together, we’ve made Kentucky a safer place to live, work, and raise a family (click here to learn about my record as Attorney General). I hope to build on those accomplishments and continue my record of service to Kentucky as your United States Senator.
The challenges facing our Commonwealth include near double-digit unemployment rates, high school dropout rates that lead the nation, exploding healthcare costs and looming dangers abroad. Kentucky, now is the time for a new generation of leadership.
...
Now is the time. Together, we can take back Wendell Ford’s Senate seat and return it to the people for whom he fought.
Here's a video of Conway's announcement:
Conway, a native of Louisville, turns 40 years old this year. He is a graduate of Duke University and George Washington Law, and worked several years on the Hill and n the administration of former Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton. He narrowly lost a House bid in 2002 to then-Rep. Anne Northup, and was elected Attorney General in 2007.
He'll face another strong Democrat, Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, in the primary.
Polls show both Conway and Mongiardo defeating Bunning comfortably, and they show Conway ahead of the strongest potential replacement Republican, Trey "Grayskull" Grayson.
This remains one of the Democrats' best pickup opportunities, with either candidate.
