With the debate on whether impeachment is a good or bad idea, I came up with a completely different plan.
Impeachment states boldly that we think what was done was wrong. But Impeachment is, implicitly, a political fight, one were doomed to lose (there is no way 67 senators will vote for impeachment in 2006, 2007, or 2008). And we don't really want a President Cheney, anyway.
Look below the fold for my ideas
I say don't impeach. After this administration leaves office in 2009, begin investigations of treason and war crimes.
After we boot these people out of office, they cannot cover their tracks with pardons, and we rob them of the political cover of Impeachment (namely, that 'It is just to get at the Republicans'). War crimes trials about torture, trial about lying to congress, treason for outing a CIA operative. Without their political covers, We might actually be able to get to the truth in open court. We'd know anyone convicted will go to jail, not a pardon and a cushy lobbing job. It can be pushed as plan to escape pardons.
It will still go a long way towards restoring our position, and Court TV and CNN will have a heyday.
What do you guys think of the idea?
