This time it may cost a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate the remainder of her life.
Hopes for the release of Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi were dashed today with the announcement she has been arrested for violating the terms of her house arrest and could face up to five years' confinement after a bizarre intrusion by an American who swam across a lake to her home.
What did she do to "deserve" these new charges? Nothing.
She was passively subjected to the deranged proselytizing of an American Mormon.
The man is to blame, but Aung San Suu Kyi suffers the consequences.
The motives of the man, identified as John Yettaw, 53, were unclear. But a lawyer for Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi said the man told her he was a Mormon and prayed extensively while he was in her house. The lawyer, U Kyi Win, described Mr. Yettaw as "a nutty fellow."
{snip}
Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyers had been preparing to demand her release after six years of detention, "and then this chap comes swimming along," her lawyer said. "I’m sure we would say it was not very Christian."
The lawyer said Mr. Yettaw had swum to Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi’s house once before, last November, and had left "a little Bible" for her.
Yes, obviously, the military junta is to blame for this ridiculous charge. But that an American would subject this brave woman to torture or worse simply to try and indoctrinate her to his religion is abhorrent.
