Convenes: 9:30am
Resume consideration of HR2346, Emergency Supplemental Appropriations. There will be up to 2 hours for debate in relation to Inouye amendment #1133 (Guantanamo funding). The Republicans will control the first 30 minutes. The Majority will control the next 30 minutes. The final hour will be equally divided with senators permitted to speak for up to 10 minutes each.
At approximately 11:30am, the Senate will proceed to vote on the Inouye amendment.
Under Rule 22, the filing deadline is 1:00pm for germane first degree amendments.
The Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights is back in the House today, having been sent back amended by the Senate. And those amendments include the wacky "guns in the parks" rider added by Crossword Tommy Coburn (R-OK), and which got 28 Democratic votes. I wonder how many of those votes were going along for the ride, and counting on the House to disagree with that amendment and remove it in conference, so that they'd be able to say they voted "pro gun" but still not have to deal with the prospect of everybody in public parks protecting their pic-a-nic baskets with loaded weapons. Well, whether they meant it or not, it looks like there are gonna be guns in those baskets in the end.
In the Senate, it's the supplemental. And the reference to Rule 22 tells you that cloture's been invoked on the bill, which means they'll at least be assured of getting it done this week. Or I guess I should say that they'll be assured of passing the Senate's version of it. No guarantee what happens after that, with respect to any changes the Senate has made to the House version, and the need for any conference. Remember, it's the Memorial Day District Work Period starting this weekend, so time is short if they want that done before they break. But I don't think there's any big rush this time, unlike prior years, when George W. Bush kept threatening he'd cut off the troops if the bill wasn't written his way, and passed when he said so.
Full committee schedule -- in a new, experimental format -- is below the fold.
I'm gonna have to cheat a little bit on the committee hearings schedule today, because I've got to get to bed earlier than usual and get up early tomorrow. So instead of my normal formatting, I'm going to borrow from other publicly available schedules, and maybe add in a few links so that you can get to all the same information I usually provide, though you might have to do a little clicking around in some cases to find streaming video of the events.
The Senate list comes to you as is, with the links to the committee web pages in the original. The House committee schedule original has no links in it, so there I've provided you with links that get you as close to the available information specific to that particular hearing, as opposed to links to the committee's web site.
You'll also notice that the House schedule lists the hearings first by committee name, and then chronologically for each committee, as opposed to the Senate list, which follows the form I usually use, which is chronological and then sorted within each time slot by the committee name. Hopefully that won't confuse anyone. It's certainly a hell of a lot simpler to compile, though I think I like the format I've adopted better, if only because I also give you a link to the video. But I might have to reevaluate that, given the toll the list has taken on my sanity, and the countless hours of sleep I've lost along the way putting it together.
