First, a reminder of what Senator Wannabe had to say back in the day (complete transcript beneath the fold):
The final bit from that video is pretty funny:
Q: Were you fearful you were going to be caught on tape here, having a conversation with Rob Blagojevich, who was raising money, about talking about raising money or about the senate seat.
BURRIS: Absolutely not.
... because he should have been fearful, given that at least one of his conversations was caught on tape and it proves that Burris is a liar. For example, Burris had said:
I made it very clear to him that I would not contribute.
And from the wiretap:
BURRIS: I know I could give him a check.
BLAGOJEVICH: Yeah.
BURRIS: Myself.
And in fact, there were only two things that Burris made clear to Blagojevich; that he was looking for a way to contribute so he wouldn't "catch hell," and that he wanted that senate seat:
BURRIS: And, and my law partner, we were gonna try to do something at the law firm. I might be able to do this in the name of Tim Wright.
BLAGOJEVICH: Mm hm.
BURRIS: Okay, 'cause Tim is not looking for an appointment, okay.
But Burris was looking for that appointment - as he mentioned more than ten times in the course a conversation about various ways he could get money to Blagojevich.
And here's Burris showing his "commitment ... to get out of pay-to-play":
BURRIS: Okay, okay, well we, we, I, I will personally do something, okay.
BLAGOJEVICH: Okay. Alright Roland.
BURRIS: And it'll be done before the 15th of December.
BLAGOJEVICH: Okay ... Hey, you're a good friend. I'll pass on your message.
BURRIS: Please do and ...
BLAGOJEVICH: Okay.
BURRIS: ... tell Rod to keep me in mind for that seat, would ya?
And it's almost funny that Burris claimed in February that Blagojevich:
... called me back and I told him that. I said, number one, I can't raise any money for you and I can't give you any money, because I don't want to have a conflict.
... when the wiretap revealed that the actual number one thing Burris said to Blagojevich was:
I, I know you're calling telling me that you're gonna make me king of the world, and uh, and therefore I can go off to, you know, wherever and do all these great things.
So, how did Burris explain away what was revealed by the taped conversation between him and Blagojevich?
Q: (inaudible) that you planned to give money. You said, okay, I'll do something on a personal level on ...
BURRIS: But, but, after, after, after I hung up the phone, I said, I can't even do that.
Of course he did.
Q: Why do you believe, why do you believe that your appointment will not be tainted by the criminal charges that are now hanging over the governor?
BURRIS: Rob Blagojevich reached out to me in three separate phone calls to ask for assistance raising money for his brother, then-governor Blagojevich. A fact that I fully disclosed in my affidavit to the impeachment committee. I made it very clear to him that I would not contribute. That it would be inappropriate and a major conflict because I had expressed an interest in the senate seat.
BURRIS: ... he called me back and I told him that. I said, number one, I can't raise any money for you and I can't give you any money, because I don't want to have a conflict. I mean, and, that should give some indication of my, of my commitment right there to get out of pay-to-play. And they're still trying to tie me in to pay-to-play.
