Tom Coburn, GOP candidate for Senate in Oklahoma, has had
allegations raised that:
1) He sterilized a woman without her consent.
and
2) Defrauded Medicaid by charging it for the procedure, which is not permissible under Medicaid regulations.
Coburn was treating the woman for an ectopic (outside the uterus) pregnancy. This sounds suspiciously like an abortion to me (according to Coburn's own nutcase-rightwing definition), but Coburn went on to remove the fallopian tube, leaving the woman sterile.
She sued, but did not pursue the lawsuit. Coburn turned the charges over to Medicaid, calling it "Treatment for an ectopic pregnancy," rather than a sterilization procedure.
Coburn said that his political opponents are drumming up a scandal, but all I know is that according to his definition, I've performed at least one fewer abortions than Tom Coburn.
