I've been a strong Dean supporter since last February, as anyone familiar with my diary entries can attest. But with the suspension of Dean's campaign I am strongly considering lending my support to John Edwards. Here's why:
- To me, the number one reason I supported Dean was his integrity and his willingness to say what he believes. Edwards is slick, to be sure, but he seems to be willing to say what's right vs. what's popular. Not always, but certainly more than Kerry. Edwards has taken responsibility for his war vote, he talks non-stop about helping the poor, and he shows a commanding power to persuade rather than just preach. Obviously he's a far cry from Dean, but I think his campaign represents a step in the right direction.
- If you want to compare the Johns solely on the issues, it's likely a wash. But remember that whomever we get as Pres. is going to have a tough time pushing things through Congress. Who is more likely to rally the country around our causes, and who is more likely to get caricatured as an out-of-touch lib? I think we're going to need a smooth talker to take our case to the public, and that's not Kerry.
- There is of course an argument for trying to send Dean delegates to the convention to influence the party platform and make our presence shown. But let's be realistic, here: where are the numbers for Dean? Here on the ground in California most voters are saying "I thought he dropped out." Now he has dropped out. (Well not completely but most voters won't know the difference.) Without campaign commercials here, it's likely Californians won't even realize he is still "running." We could put all our effort into getting Dean delegates and still come up far short of 15%. If instead we loudly jump to Edwards, we can claim credit if Edwards pulls out a win in Cal or NY. If nothing else we'll scare the bejeezus out of Kerry. We need to focus on a kingmaker strategy. With Kerry we'll have no sway, period. With Edwards we could have plenty.
I would
never presume to tell good Dean supporters how they should swing. I have too much respect for this movement and the people involved in it. So let me just put it out there: the
John Edwards meet-up is this Tuesday, Feb 24. I will be attending in my Dean tee-shirt, not yet convinced but ready to listen.
