McDoc and I have arrived in Boston, and things are so far, so good, with one BIG exception...
Picture this: you've found a great new job and an apartment you love in a neighborhood that's chock-full of charming restaurants and independently owned businesses. You made the twelve-hour drive from your former home in one piece, despite rain and thunder on a biblical scale. The movers arrived with your furniture and other possessions a mere three days after your arrival, minimizing the back pain you had to suffer from sleeping on an air mattress. Your cat seems to love his new home, and consequently has forgiven you for subjecting him to that car ride. There are beautiful parks and trees everywhere, and you're within a short drive of both the ocean and the mountains.
What could possibly be missing?
The internet, that's what! AAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!
A certain company which shall remain nameless, but whose initials are V-E-R-I-Z-O-N, failed to inform you that there would be a one-week lag between the start of phone service and the start of internet service. Had you known this, you would have paid for the phone service starting a week prior to your arrival. Hell, you would have paid for it for two weeks prior – anything to avoid being cut off from everything that is important and good and worthwhile in the world. Not to mention the fact that reliable internet access is sort of indispensable to your job, and it really makes you look like a major-league wanker to have to tell people that you don’t have it.
What are you to do? Well, a few things. Call up the offending company and raise a colossal stink. This won't do any good whatsoever, but it might make you feel better. Of course you will also have your computer's wireless antenna scan for unlocked networks every 10 seconds, like a rat pressing a lever in the futile hope of receiving another food pellet. That sometimes works, but it's mostly a big cosmic tease, not to mention the damage it does to your karma. What's it called when you hop on someone else's network? Pirating? Leeching? Being a web parasite? I'd look it up so I could describe it accurately, except I DON'T HAVE A GODDAMN INTERNET CONNECTION!!!
If you are indeed reading this, dear fellow internet addict, then you know that our heroine managed to find a wifi hotspot that enabled her to do her sworn Top Comments duty. I hope that someone gets my... I hope that someone gets my... I hope that someone gets my... message in a bohhhhh-tuhl...
I hope your connection doesn't fail as we move on to the Top Comments!
