Here's a very real issue, made more important by recent results: What happens with the delegates won by a candidate who has withdrawn?
Gephardt's delegates from Iowa will be re-allotted in the county caucuses later on, so that's not a huge problem. But what about other states? Sooner or later either Edwards, Kerry or Clark will have to withdraw, and that will happen after they have quite a few delegates. The longer all three stay in, the more delegates.
Formally, those delegates can vote for whomever they want (after the first, unsuccessful vote for their candidate), although they are likely to do as their "da man" advices. So, for all intents and purposes, they will be "anybody but Dean" super-delegates...
The way I understand it, that part of the game doesn't bode well for Dean. Or am I missing something important?
