Thomas "useful idiot" Friedman hits a
new low today with the astonishingly disassociated claim:
Personally, I don't believe the Bush team will pay a long-term political price for its faith-based intelligence about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Too many Americans, including me, believe in their guts that removing Saddam was the right thing to do, even if the W.M.D. intel was wrong.
That's a spectacularly weak basis on which to declare a war of aggression. And make no mistake, it was a war of aggression. Remember "shock and awe?" There's not much liberation in a phrase like that. Never mind the unwillingness to provide police support in the post-war chaos.
He goes on to claim that it's the Nixonian budget deficit that will do Bush in, while 25-30% of that deficit is directly attributable to the Iraq invasion! It's incredibly irresponsible to pretend that there's no connection between these two things.
