Tom Duane, an HIV-positive NY state senator, gave a late night speech last week in favor of a bill to cap the amount HIV-positive recipients of state aid would have to pay for housing at 30%, instead of the current $330/month ($11/day) above their rent they're allowed to keep. It's 22 minutes long. You should watch it. He got a standing ovation at the end.
It's about more than just his bill - it's about how Americans turned their back on people with HIV. No, that's too generous; we never really gave a fuck about them from the beginning and people only started to care when they organized and made themselves impossible to ignore.
But Duane discusses a few ways in which people just want them to die or disappear. This is 2009 and we're still not over these things. So watch the video and get yourself some education.
