Republican-led Congress Shows True Colors
In a time of obscene corporate greed and tax cuts for the rich, the Bush Administration has the nerve to claim that they care about America's working families. Just last week for example, conservative Republicans voted to decrease estate taxes for millionaires and billionaires, while in another vote they once again denied an increase of the minimum wage. Despite the fact that an increase would directly benefit our country's hardest working families, Republicans have not increased the minimum wage in over a decade.
Since 1997, Democrats have tried nine times to increase the minimum wage and each time Republicans have blocked these efforts. Instead, they offer a tax cut for the wealthiest among us.
The non-partisan Tax Policy Center has reported that Bush's law would result in an average tax cut of a mere $20 for middle-income households. [Washington Post, 5/10/06] A minimum wage increase of even a dollar per hour would surpass the Republican's meager tax savings in less than three days!
Adding insult to injury, since the last minimum wage increase, the Republican-led congress has voted to increase their own salaries by roughly $30,000.
