This is another in a series of distraction diaries. No birthiness here, just photos of birds and things. I hope you enjoy your visit.
Southeast Oahu
Ruddy Turnstone
Usually a winter visitor. This small flock appears to have stayed for the summer.
Hawaiian Moorhen, endemic and endangered.
Hawaiian Moorhen chick stretches its mighty wings.
The Small Asian Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus)
This alien species is one of the worst pests in Hawaii. They are common on all island except Kauai and have done tremendous damage to the native bird population. They were brought intentionally to combat rats in the sugar cane fields. A very bad idea, especially considering that the mongoose is a diurnal hunter and the rat is nocturnal.
Shorebreak Wave
A sleepy monk seal
Hawaiian Monk Seal. These animals are highly endangered, only 1,200 remain and the population is decreasing.
Blowhole
Immature Black-Crowned Night Heron
Hawaiian Coot, endemic and endangered.
That is it for this brief diary. Please feel free to post your photos and please be good humans.
