Opposing Scalito on the merits is all well and good, and should be pursued full time by every elected Dem on the planet.
Yet we liberals always lose track of the politics of personal destruction as an offensive tool. It works very well, especially with puritanical-streak Republican figures. And you don't (just) bring a knife to a gunfight.
There's a little tidbit over at Attytood:

"By then, young Sam Alito -- who was graduating Princeton on his way to Yale Law School -- was already in the Army Reserves, which, as this article notes, "became a haven for those avoiding service in Vietnam." The future judge served in the reserves until 1980 and left with the rank of captain.
How did he get that coveted slot? The judge's father, Sam Alito Sr., was the director of New Jersey's Office of Legislative Services in 1972, so he surely knew some powerful politicians. Did someone make a phone call? We're curious."
It's run of the mill Republican dirt- it seems like every 50-something Rethug had political connections that helped them avoid the draft.
But there's probably more like this in Scalito's past. After all, a man who likes strip searching 10-year old girls is bound to have some interesting tastes.
