Prime Minister Brown wrote a Op-Ed published in Newsweek. He calls for the upcoming meetings in New York, Pittsburgh, and Copenhagen to focus on developing new technology for the worlds energy needs.
Mr. Brown says:
Initially, more-efficient consumption of energy will bring greater overall productivity, as resources once directed to meet fuel bills are released for investment. Meanwhile the need for low-carbon energy production and infrastructure, in both the developed world and the rapidly growing emerging economies, will require up to $33 trillion of investment by 2030, according to estimates from the International Energy Agency. By 2015, the global environmental sector could be worth $7 trillion and sustain tens of millions of jobs.
These investments in clean energy technology are not just an investment for now, but also for future jobs and security around the world. There are those out there who say this is not the time to change the current system, or invest in something that may not work. But if you look around the world other countries have made it work.
Creating green technology is a two fold solution to global warming and our current reliance on foreign oil. By being self sufficient organizations like OPEC will not be able to bring the economy down on it's knees like it did in the 1970's. This makes too much sense for so little action to have been taken.
The meetings which will be taking place in New York this week have the opportunity to take action that has the potential to help secure economic prosperity for millions. Action is needed, and hopefully the world leaders will have the confidence to take it.
