For those who aren't familiar with it, slashdot ("News for nerds. Stuff that matters") is a blog, maybe the original blog, for computer geeks, especially open source/Linux types. If slashdot looks like dailyKos, it's because the code dailyKos runs is somewhat a descendant of the slashdot code. slashdot has enough readers that a link posted there will get enough hits to shut down that links' server ("the slashdot effect"). The creator of slashdot (Rob Malda) sold the site for way more than $1 million (about the same time he graduated from college).
Anyway, the "special draft possible for computer programmers" story hit slashdot today. The comments section for the story exceeded 1000 comments, which is high even for slashdot.
For anyone draft eligble in the late 60s/early 70s, a lot of the posts, both pro and con, will look very familiar - a portent of what to expect if even a specialized draft is reinstated. The short version is a lot of people are saying "Hell no, we won't go".
The number and intensity of the posts is interesting. A lot of the anti-draft posters associate the draft with BushCo, and keep in mind a lot of these people are more Libertarian than Dem.
