The United States Senate and the Republican Party have just ensured that May 18, 2006 will go down in the history books as one of the darkest and most wicked days in the life of this nation. Not since American Senators fought for slavery, fought against the vote for women and fought for an American alliance with Adolph Hitler, has the U.S. Senate witnessed such perfidy.
Only hours ago, the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee approved adding a ban on gay marriage to the U.S. Constitution. Although expected, this betrayal of the American way of life, the Constitution, civil rights, human rights and common decency comes as a shock to the American system and to all people who uphold the fundamental principles of democracy. The not so Grand Old Party, the Bush White House and the Congress of 2006 will not be judged well by history or by the rest of the civilized world.
