The "It's about Alaska" theme seems has struck home for Scott McAdams, who announced this weekend that his campaign raised a whopping $650,000 since the primary.
McAdams's more than half-a-million-dollar haul suggests he has the funds to stay competitive in the race, though recent polls show him trailing Miller and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who after losing the Republican primary, is waging a write-in campaign to keep her seat.
National Democrats also boosted his coffers: McAdams recently received $42,000 from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
But the news is actually better than just that--while Murkowski and Miller have money from DC big interests, more than half of McAdams' came from individual donors in Alaska, which is pretty damned good for a small population, purple-at-best state. From the press release the campaign e-mailed:
With the belief that Alaskans should decide their own future, the campaign attracted over half of its donations from Alaskans; 90% of contributions campaign contributions were under $200.
“Honestly, my campaign slogan says it all—“It’s About Alaska,’” McAdams said. “I haven’t taken trips to Washington D.C., and I haven’t had big dollar dinners with corporate donors. This campaign is about Alaskans and giving them the opportunity to support a strong future for our state. I thank Alaska for the outpouring of support I continue to find across the state.”
McAdams has also proven that he can draw a crowd, even at a distance. The campaign reports that last night's telephone town hall meeting attracted 12,000 participats, with listeners from across the state--from Willow, Kodiak, Eagle River, Juneau and Bethel. McAdams promises more town halls, both in person and by phone between now and November 2nd. Which he needs to do to keep reminding Alaskans--particulalry moderate Republicans, independents, and Dems who are scared witless that Miller could take the seat that he's the best alternative.
From his fundraising to the response to his townhalls, he's making good progress.
