Sharron Angle is stoking fears about the imposition of theocracy in America...but not just any theocracy. She's afraid of theocracy by Muslims, who she says are trying to impose Sharia Law in the United States. Via Greg Sargent:
QUESTIONER: I keep hearing about Muslims wanting to take over the United States. And I want to know your thoughts about that. They are building mosques all over the place. They want to build one near [ground zero]. And they seem to be getting their way. On a TV program just last night I saw that they are taking over a city in Michigan. And the residents, they want them out. They want them out. I wanted your thoughts.
ANGLE: We're talking about a militant terrorist situation, which I believe isn't a widespread thing. But it is enough that we need to address, and we have been addressing it. My thoughts are these. First of all, Dearborn, Michigan, and Frankford, Texas are on American soil, and under Constitutional law. Not Sharia law. And I don't know how that happened in the United States.
It seems to me there is something fundamentally wrong with allowing a foreign system of law to even take hold in any municipality or government situation in our United States.
Obviously, Angle is correct that imposing Sharia Law in America would be horrible. But while she is right about that, she's right for all the wrong reasons. Even as Angle sounds the alarm bells about the threat of Islamic theocracy coming to America -- a threat that simply doesn't exist -- she's quite content to impose her own radical religious views on America.
Whether its seeking to ban abortion in all cases except when the woman's life is at stake or banning black football jerseys in high school football games because they are 'Satanic,' Sharron Angle is making it clear that it's not theocracy that she opposes, it's just theocracy by any religion other than her own.
And in that sense, when Sharia Sharron when she talks about religious freedom, she means freedom to practice her religion, and to hell with yours. And when she says she's running for U.S. Senate to take America back, she talking about taking America back to the days before it was America -- before there was a First Amendment protecting us from the extremism that Sharron Angle claims to oppose.
