No matter the Repubs' Katrina or DeLay woes, the basic dynamic has not changed:
While Dems accommodate themselves to the prevailing views, Repubs state their positions clearly and convert others.
While Dems defend big issues by making small concessions, Repubs attack big issues by making small gains.
While Dems keep their powder dry waiting for a meaningful battle, Repubs increase power by exercising it -- win or lose.
While Dems follow the center rightward, Repubs push the center rightward.
While Dems try to give Repubs enough rope to hang themselves, Repubs attack, attack, attack, whether in or out of power.
While Dems score points by attacking liberals, Repubs score points by attacking liberals.
While Dems avoid sounding shrill and divisive, Repubs energize voters.
While Dems avoid getting too far out in front of voters, Repubs lead.
So, what exactly does it mean to be a Democrat -- not just spouting platitudes, but how one functions in the debate?
