I have been writing a series of diaries lately on the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan. This will be brief with a few short action items. Follow me after the jump to help the dolphins.
An incomplete cliff notes version of this week's events:
On Monday dolphin trainers drowned 2 dolphins in the cove while trying to subdue them for inspection.
On Tuesday 40 dolphins were slaughtered, some also released. A couple babies wouldn't leave and were swimming in their mother's blood so they were killed as well.
Wednesday they chased some dolphins but they escaped.
Thursday they killed 10-12 pilot whales.
Friday they found nothing.
It is now Saturday morning in Japan and more dolphins are already in the cove! Two pods were chased down, one escaped and the other was driven into the cove and will now be slaughtered.
Take a look at my previous diaries if you would like more in depth info, and I promise to write a more detailed piece again soon.
For the moment I would like to ask you to call a Japanese embassy or consulate. It may be after business hours at some locations but you can still get a hold of a person by selecting the emergency option. The number for the Japanese embassy in Washington DC is (202) 238-6700. Consulates on the west coast are still open as of this diary being posted. The number for the consulate in Los Angeles is (213) 617-6700 & the number for the consulate in San Francisco is (415) 777-3533. You can find a full link of consulates in the US here, and a link to embassies and consulates worldwide here. Get in touch with President Obama HERE as he will be meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan any time now and he needs to relay our concerns about the dolphins.
Ask to speak to someone about the dolphins in Taiji. You only need to give them a brief and polite message about how you oppose the slaughter. A 1 minute phone call. Japan does not appreciate so much negative attention over the actions of a few men, so please keep the pressure on them as they take note of how many people are calling each time they kill dolphins and will eventually decide that it is no longer worth the negative attention.
