My rage has been building all week.
I generally do not like emotion-laden diaries and comments. I prefer rational discussion, and I prefer to think of political opponents as people of good will with different views.
That is no longer possible.
The handling of the New Orleans tragedy has made it clear that George W. Bush is indifferent to the lives and deaths of poor people. I don't believe he distinguishes among the races of poor people - he could not care what color the dead are. But most poor are not white, so his actions are racist.
Why pay attention to FEMA? The agency deals with problems of poor people. Use it as a patronage shop. Give the big job to the college roommate of a campaign manager, even though he couldn't run a horse show.
What can we do about Katrina? We can schedule a photo-op! Of course, that means that rescues and relief flights will have to be suspended, and more poor black and white people will die. But you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs, eh ? ;-)
All across America, people of every color and income bracket have been contributing to the Red Cross. But, we won't let them deliver food and water to dying people - that might make the poor stay in town. So a few infants will die of dehydration - we're strong enough to take it.
What is our top priority after our vacation was so rudely interrupted? The repeal of the estate tax, of course. Put it first on the legislative calendar. It will put hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into the hands of my family and my Cabinet.
If there is a God, these people will burn in Hell for an eternity.
