The one thing I like most about John Kerry his he proved that it is never to late to become a decent snowboarder. Respect, Senator! I always felt to old to learn it, and I am just 27.
But in the last days, all the hell was going on in the world: The Spanish Elections and the right wing's Appeasement fantasies, the upgrading of the U.S. relationship to nuke-loving Pakistan and most important, today is the first anniversary of the fall of Baghdad. My hope would have been, to see the Democratic candidate to attack the Bush administration right now on their disastrous foreign policy and their complete failure in the war against terror.
Unfortunately, reading the NY Times I discovered:
"Mr. Kerry arrived Wednesday night for a full week of rest and relaxation, and a rare bit of privacy with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, at their high-altitude retreat."
So, at the height of the discussion, John Kerry goes skiing. Because, as some advisors point out, he badly needed a break:
"Several Democrats and Kerry aides said some of his missteps were a result of exhaustion. They and some of the senator's friends said the vacation could not have come too soon. "He needed it about as badly as anybody could need it," said Sam Grossman, a real estate developer who has skied with Ms. Heinz Kerry here for decades, and with Mr. Kerry for years. "The best thing that can happen is he'll sleep, relax, eat some good food, and then, in a couple of days, he'll be back firing again."
I really hope he will gather enough energy in Idaho to effectively counter the Republican smear attacks. But my fear is, this was a major mistake. He should have waited for next week.
It doesn't look good. But in the end he will prevail - on the slopes and in Washington.
