This was some tough talk from Mary Landrieu yesterday -- but there's a catch:
Though some conservative Democrats and moderate Republicans praised the plan, conservative Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) attacked it harshly, calling the extension of Bush tax cuts for wealthy Americans 'morally corrupt.'
"What is new to me is a concept that we're going to borrow $46 billion according to the Obama-McConnell plan -- and that's what I'm calling it...we're going to borrow 46 billion from the poor, from the middle class, from businesses all sizes, basically, to give a tax cuts to families in America today that despite the recession are making over a million dollars," she said. "This is unprecedented."
Lord knows, when it comes to ending the Bush tax policy, President Obama has done a pathetic job, a distinction he shares with every Democrat in Congress who failed to press the case on tax cuts before the election.
But listening to Mary Landrieu criticize him for it? Come on. That's not just pathetic, it is the very definition of moral corruptness. After all, she hadn't gotten her way when she voted for the Bush tax cuts, we wouldn't be in this position to begin with.
All that being said, it's never too late to redeem yourself. If Mary Landrieu can lead a successful Democratic filibuster to block the extension of Bush's millionaire tax cuts, then kudos to her. She'll have undone the damage she caused in the first place. But I wouldn't bet on that happening.
