Yesterday, we were told that the tax cut deal can’t be changed:
Vice President Joe Biden told House Democrats on Wednesday that the tax agreement the White House struck with Republicans was essentially final, forcing the divided caucus to decide whether to press its fight for changes in the package.
"It’s up or down," Biden told the caucus in a closed-door meeting, according to Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.).
Well, today, it was changed:
A key ethanol tax credit has made the cut as part of a deal extending Bush-era tax incentives.
Merf. Although, to be fair, the deal should also include tax incentives for actual renewable energy, like wind and solar. Exact legislative language should be revealed later tonight.
The salient point here is not that we should just swallow tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans now that renewable energy incentives have been added to it. Instead, the point is that the deal is not final, can clearly be changed. It was just changed. This isn’t over.
Also, in support of those still leading the opposition, the 27,000+ signatures and comments to your petition thanking Representative Peter Welch and Senator Bernie Sanders was delivered to their offices on Capitol Hill today. It was warmly received.
