I have largely stopped listening to NPR news programs in light of their continued rightward and downward descent to the dark side. But Scott Simon has been the exception for me - up until this morning.
This morning I turned on Scott Simon's show on NPR at 9AM, expecting to hear Dan Schorr or Simon Hoggart, a used to be regular subsitute for Schorr, doing news analysis. But what do I hear? Simon introducing Jonah Goldberg of National Review! As a substitute for Dan Schorr! I was so horrified, I practically broke the knob on the radio turning it off!
But turning off the radio isn't enough - and stopping contributions isn't enough either, although I've done both. I am heartbroken about what has happened and continues to happen to public broadcasting, and I wonder if Kossacks out there have any strategies to take back the night here. I know, winning back the House and/or the Senate, and the White House in 2008, is the ultimate strategy - but is there anything concrete we can do in the mean time?
I also wonder if Simon was under duress to have Goldberg on his show - I can't imagine this was voluntary, but I wonder how it came about. Does anyone have any ideas?
(I hope this subject is worthy of a diary.)
