I may be a sheep ...
I felt for most of this last year that I owed John Kerry one. I'm 58 and I remember Vietnam, in fact spent two years in prison as a draft resister, I'm quite proud of that, and I thought Kerry's willingness to speak out back then had earned him my support now -- plus he's been a very progressive vote in the Senate for a long time. That's what counts, not whether he's dull. In the one speech I saw six months ago on TV, Kerry looked pretty wooden. But the military record makes him good on looking strong after 9/11, which, I agree with what Clinton said, is what most people want in a leader in crisis times. So I sent some money to Kerry.
But then it seemed that the conventional wisdom was that Kerry was going nowhere, and "owing Kerry one" only goes so far. I sent Clark a little money, on the "strong" rationale, but with little enthusiam.
Then, a couple of months ago I think, it seemed that Dean, who is a breath of straight talk and fresh air, had put together a fundraising strategy and an appeal that would work. I donated to Dean and went to a Meetup.
Now it seems that Dean's theory/strategy wasn't able to do it in the real world, twice, despite more than plenty of money. After Iowa I sent a few more bucks to Kerry, I guess on electability -- and there is still the part about owing him one.
What's next -- who knows? Does this little personal arc of sheeplike inclination resonate with anyone?
