Just diarying my letter to Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn. They're both staunch Republicans, so I doubt it will do any good.
But Cheney saying that the American people support Bush gets my back hairs up. I know at least one that doesn't!
Kay & John, I'm writing to you today to express my hope that you will support Senator Feingold in his proposed censure of President Bush.
While you might feel that it's your duty as a Republican to support your president in a time of war, there's nothing in the Constitution that says that you must support your President if he breaks the law.
Bill Frist may talk as loudly as he wants about the wiretaps being "good, lawful, and constitutional," but he can't change the truth. Our president has flip-flopped from saying he wouldn't be able to talk about the domestic spying issue, to suggesting there was no other way to wiretap terrorists, and then finally saying that the FISA law was out of date. Now he says that the powers of the presidency and the Patriot act give him the authority.
More below the fold...
When you signed the Patriot Act, did you mean to give our president the right to do whatever he decided was necessary to defend our country? Many senators have said they never intended the Patriot Act to give the president wide sweeping powers to conduct surveillance of American citizens on U.S. soil. In fact, when Clinton was in office, he requested an expansion of wiretapping authority to help protect against terrorism, and the Republican Congress turned him down. As Newt Gingrich said, "When you have an agency that turns nine hundred personnel files over to people like Craig Livingstone... it's very hard to justify giving the agency more power."
We can't depend upon the White House approved subcommittee to get to the bottom of this investigation. We need an independent and smooth-running committee to find out the facts. If the White House really has nothing to hide, why are they covering up the truth? The American people need to know the facts.
According to Dick Cheney, "The American people already made their decision... They agree with the president." This is just not true. I am an American citizen, and I DO NOT agree with the president.
Please stand up for our rights as American citizens, and help to protect our Constitution. Support the motion to censure President Bush, and show him what the American public really thinks.
