I have not owned a Bible for a few decades, since I gave one, "The Jerusalem Bible", to a nominal Christian. I own a Koran, with a lot of commentary, and a Bible Concordance, but with all the wing-nuttery being flung around, I think I need a Bible again to check their sources. But when I went to the bookstore, I was overwhelmed by the choices today!
I would like one with commentary on word origins and reliability of sources. Sr. Helen Prejean's book, "The Death of Innocents" has a passage about Antonin Scalia's support of the death penalty based on Romans 13. She contends that he is mistaken because, for example, he misinterprets the phrase translated as "wrath of the sword" to refer to capital punishment, when the Latin word used, "machaira", means a dagger used by the Roman military to keep the peace, not a broad-sword used to execute people.
This level of analysis would be very helpful to contradict errors in the arguments of our opposition. Can anyone suggest a Bible with this level of commentary?
