Looks like Cheney's got a lot of heavy blocking and tackling to do on Tuesday. He has to try to stop our game and get the ball back. But, like Bush, he comes in totin' a record. He's been happy to be known as "the most powerful VP ever." Cheney has been the most hawkish chickenhawk. He has been Bush's regular counselor with frequent private lunches. The mess in Iraq is plainly his mess too.
But if he wants to steer the debate away from that responsibility, there's a whole lot of earlier stuff on him. Some Cheney positions, votes and flip-flops (Thanks, Issues2000.org):
* Worldwide market thrives only with peaceful stability. (Sep 1992)
* South Africa: Voted against apartheid sanctions in 1980s.
* Voted against WIC welfare nutrition programs
* Co-sponsored bills to limit water lawsuits & construct dams.
* User fees in National Parks & Forests; drill ANWR.
* Met with Enron representatives in drawing up energy plan.
* Voted against Head Start, and against Dept. of Education.
* Was twice convicted of drunk driving charges.
* Halliburton receives $7B in no-bid contracts in Iraq.
* Voted against ERA in 1983
* "Deficits don't matter".
* Supported Balanced Budget Amendment.
* Co-sponsored numerous bills for balancing the budget.
* Supported Balanced Budget Amendment.
* Co-sponsored "Preborn Children's Civil Rights Act of 1985".
* In Congress: No exceptions in the case of rape or incest.
* Exemptions for rape, incest or woman's life now OK.
John Edwards should find plenty of opportunities to score against this opponent. He didn't make all that money not being persuasive at building airtight cases.
Go team!
