Well, you do if you're a member of some of the Progressive Organizations who have been fighting for the inclusion of the Hot Potato Public Option in a final version of health insurance reform.
And if you're not... consider the jump your mailing...
The email is the launch of an effort in response to the recent statements coming from Senator Dick Durbin's office, and it is building on an effort launched yesterday to apply pressure on Senator Durbin (pressure that may well have led to his newest statement).
In response to Durbin's statement, The Polis-Pingree Letter is being re-opened:
That's why Representatives Jared Polis (D-CO) and Chellie Pingree (D-ME) are re-opening their letter -- already signed by 120 House members -- calling for the public option in reconciliation.
Yes, another whip effort. But DEVOcracy is not a spectator sport.
Head on over to WhipCongress, and they'll provide you with a call script that goes something like this:
Hi -- this is [NAME] and I'm calling from [TOWN].
Representatives Jared Polis and Chellie Pingree have a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, asking her to pass the public option through reconciliation, which only needs 51 votes in the Senate. Over 40 senators and 120 other representatives have spoken out in support of this plan, and over 200,000 people signed a petition supporting it.
I'm calling to ask [REPRESENTATIVE] to sign the Polis-Pingree letter asking Speaker Pelosi to pass the public option through reconciliation? Will he do it today?
[please use these exact words]
[AWAIT RESPONSE]
[If they say the letter's been closed, tell them it's been reopened.]
[If they want to know how to join the letter, tell them to contact: Rosalyn Kumar, 202 225 2161]
Crack. That. Whip.
Now, Whip. It.
