It's nearly the only thing on my mind today - the vote on health care reform. I'm excited to see it pass, and impatient with any delays. Maybe it's because I have been without health insurance since late 2007.
Living without health insurance is scary. I can't help but wonder what would happen if Rich or I were to get into a serious accident, or develop a serious illness that required immediate treatment. Rich is pretty healthy, and would be even better if he could drop a few pounds. It's that sturdy Polish stock.
I have a couple of chronic issues, which I try to manage with diet and supplements. A couple of weeks ago, I broke down and went to the doctor so that I could get one prescription. The visit cost me $97.50 for ten minutes of talk; she didn't even listen to my heart. I heard the same old things - need mammogram, need blood work, yada yada. And a new development, high blood pressure, which scared me so badly that I spent $50 that we could ill afford on a blood pressure monitor. I'm required to call in my blood pressure to the doctor every week, to prove my compliance, I guess. So far, it's been hovering at the low end of borderline, so I'm blaming the spike on the doctor.
Last December, I had visitors from out of town. While we were out shopping, I turned my ankle on a low curb, and fell. Hard. Though I don't remember it that way, they said I shrieked. Since Rich (who was waiting in the car thirty feet away) came running, I believe them. The store owners and customers came running out and tried to get me to go to Urgent Care. After I sat on the pavement for a few minutes, I found that I could stand up and even flex my knee, so I declined. But that wasn't why. I declined because I don't have hundreds of dollars to see if I damaged my leg.
It was spectacularly bruised from my knee all the way down one side of my leg to my ankle, looking like I'd been beaten with a hammer. For a month, every time I stood for more than a couple of minutes, my leg swelled to twice its normal size, particularly at the ankle. There was a numb area on my knee 2" x 3", which is just now, almost four months later, starting to resolve.
Because of this experience, the totality of it, not just the knee, I am anxiously awaiting the passage of health care reform in the House, and reconciliation in the Senate. I'm not even seriously ill, and I know we need this. It's not perfect, but nothing ever is. Imperfect is correctable.
