There's a new email from an American soldier. The message from Captain Dan Mattson to his brother describes a visit by Donald Rumsfeld to a medical facility.
It made my day, and I'm pretty certain it made theirs too.
The Captain refers to the wounded.
We've all read emails from soldiers, but rarely will we see such a glimpse in the heart and soul of Donald Rumsfeld.
The Captain discovered the Secretary's visit just prior to his arrival while surfing foxnews.com. He doubted he would encounter the SOD but at 4PM news came that Rumsfeld was in the building. As Mattson was moving a patient to the recovery room they encounted "The Donald."
Mr. Rumsfeld came over and heard the kid's story...

Rumsfeld looked concerned and kind of kept his distance from the gruesome site. He said something like "bless his heart", as if talking around him.
The young patient had lost his left hand and his right eye, but had words of comfort for the Secretary.
"Mr. Rumsfeld, I want you to know, that you are doing a fantastic job.

Our vehicles are great, and I have never searched through junk piles for scrap metal."
Rummy was moved.
The Secretary took out a coin and gave it to a bystander for him, as if he didn't know he could touch him.
After prompting from Captain Mattson the SOD shook the soldier's hand and departed.
Mattson never reveals the nature of the coin.
I'm truly sorry for the young soldier. He went to war, was maimed and his life will not be as he imagined. I wonder if he'll revere this memory in 20 years or if he'll feel differently.
