Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, after non-melanoma skin cancer. Thousands are diagnosed every year, and thousands die every year. Death counts have been on the decline due primarily to advanced treatments, screenings, and education. However, the fight still goes on, and I'm asking all of you to help.
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer could be coming soon to a town near you, with walks scheduled from April all the way to October. Chicago's walk is coming soon, June 5-6. My friend Vivian is walking, and she needs our help.
Her goal is $1800, of which she's managed to collect about $350. The remaining sum has to be gathered, or she needs to pay for it herself, out of pocket. I would hate to see someone forced to pay so much money to a cause she genuinely cares about. She works in a spa, amongst other part-time jobs (plus school; I don't think she ever sleeps), and some of her closest clients have breast cancer. She is walking for them, for their health and because of her love for her friends.
As I noted above, she needs help. I've donated, and I'm going to explore other avenues to help get her to her goal since she really has so little free time. So, I figured I'd turn to all of you.
I've seen what small donations can accomplish, what hundreds of $5 or $10 can accomplish. Last year, despite the shitty economy, the Avon Walk raised $52 million, bringing its total amount raised to over $320 million since 2003.
I'm asking for some help because Vivian is a good friend of mine, who wants to make a difference in the lives of her friends, to let them know that they are not going through their ordeal alone. She wants to walk with them, stand with them, and help them beat cancer.
So any donations, anything at all, are appreciated. This is the link to her donation page. She needs to get to $1800, but like I said anything is very appreciated.
I'm sure some people might balk at this "Donation Diary." All I can say in my defense is that this is a worthy cause, it's a worthy donation, and I'm proud of my friend Vivian for doing this and want to help however I can.
It won't take much to make a difference, and it's something that we can all do right now.
UPDATE: Vivian wanted me to extend her thanks for all who have donated so far. Thanks, guys! I'm going to re-post this throughout the week, try and get as much help as possible. Thanks again.
