BANANAS alert today! It's time for the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act. That's "Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science." Blech.
What's it all about? I don't know. I just tell you what they're working on and how. If you had a big expense account or were independently wealthy, you could read the same summary of the bill that Members of Congress read when they decide with their staffs how to vote on something. But since you don't have thousands of dollars to spend on that privatized information about our public business, you'll have to turn to the product of the Majority Whip's office, and read their summary of the bill instead. That's free, but it's basically what the staff of the committee that produced the bill wants you to read about it. Then again, that's probably pretty much what you're getting in the pay-to-play version, too.
The Senate continues its Wall Street reform work, as expected. Just a week and a half left now before the Memorial Day recess, and the war supplemental still looms, and all indications are that the Senate will have to take the lead on things, which means either getting the Wall Street reform bill out of the way ASAP, or setting it aside unfinished. There'll probably be some effort to sweeten the supplemental up a bit and tack on some additional funding, perhaps for the Gulf oil explosion clean-up, flood relief, etc., since this may essentially be the last appropriations train out of the station before the elections. And word is that there's a climate bill deal of some kind, too. So you can start the clock now on when Lindsey Graham will try to use his objection to some other, unrelated thing to withdraw his support for it.
Today's full committee schedule appears below. A typical Wednesday, with lots of activity after a slow start to the week, but things do seem to be slowing down as Members anticipate fewer and fewer opportunities to actually enact legislation before election fever takes over.
