The Hungarian geothermal district heating project of Hungarian PannErgy and Icelandic Mannvit are advancing, with drilling to start at the project at Miskolc and reinjection wells to be drilled at the Szentlörinc project.
...The well depth is planned to be 2.3 km
This is somewhat deeper than homeowners are likely to drill for heating and air conditioning.

Huge geothermal resource in the Gulf of Mexico - far, far larger than anything tapped to date. Think it might be all right to drill for water rather than oil?
