The irony of this news story hasn't caught on yet, but I predict that will change in short order....
George Bush just put Condoleezza Rice in charge of Iraq stabilization. News story here: http://news.yahoo.com/...
Feeling any queazy deja vu? That's because Bush put Rice in charge of the same damn thing back in October 2003. In addition to her role as NSA director, she was made the head of the so-called Iraq Stabilization Group. (more)
Months passed, and folks wondered whatever happened to the ISG. It kind of just faded into the mist. Here's a Dana Milbank story on the fizzled effort from May 2004:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/...
When Rice was up for Secretary of State, the Center for American Progress, in presenting 8 suggested questions for her confirmation hearing, listed "How would you evaluate your performance as head of the Iraq stabilization group?" as question 4: http://www.americanprogress.org/...
I guess being re-annointed with this sacred task at State, after frittering it away at NSA, isn't so much a case of failing upward as failing sideways.
But whom better to assign to the job than the person who left it undone to begin with?
