Not because I don't think it's a catastrophe. How could you not.
And not because I like the idea of another Islamic republic on top of an oil field. Hell I thought leaving Saddam in after the first war was one of the few smart decisions Bush I made. And I never believed he was a threat to much of anyone beyond his own borders. If an insane dictator is bent on the destruction of his neighbors beyond all reason, he won't let threats from the international community hold him back for 12+ years. Ask anyone living in Poland in 1939. And not because I don't think he owes it to the troops and their families who have lost their loved ones. If he commited suicide after capping Cheney, Rumsfeld et. al. on FOX while apologizing for the needless heatache he caused for these people it still wouldn't be enough.
I don't want George W. Bush to apologize because I want to hang him with his own rope.
I have to ask, in light of this administration's lack of willingness and ability to formulate a strategy for winning in the dire straights we find ourselves in, what would be the point?
It should be clear by now that any statement made or action taken by this White House would only be done to deflect criticism, assuage blame or shift it onto the backs of others. The election is over and it's a free ride out for the next 3 years. If they were going to adjust policy or redefine the mission parameters the time to do it has already passed. And for all the blind support this administration has gotten from it's own party, they've made it clear that on this ladder loyalty only goes one way. So I don't attach much credence to the idea they are overly concerned with republican's fortunes in 2006 and are waiting to make their move until after. They'll just keep going with what works for them. 911, terrorism over there not here, blah, blah, blah anyone not supporting their initiatives is a commie traitor.
Unfortunately for Jr. as time goes by and the media slowly rediscovers it's spine (and I'm being extremely generous in phrasing it that way) and the american public begins to finally draw away the veil of fear the administration and it's allies have draped over it's eyes, that approach is becoming less and less effective. We are very close if not past the breaking point of belief, where the repeated utterances of these tired slogans begins, not to reassure the citizenry, but to unsettle them. People can only stand in the cold rain getting drenched for so long until they no longer believe someone telling them it's sunny and warm and all's well.
Which brings us to George and his rope. The short one tied to the tiger's tail he's been holding onto since 911. The one he will hang himself with given enough time. The one Cindy Sheehan has been tying the noose on with a little help from those meddling insurgents, Terry Schiavo and, oddly enough, Karl Rove. And with every speech he makes, every talking point his right wing mouthpieces parrot over the airwaves the greater and more obvious the disconnect between reality and what's coming out of the white house is shown to be.
Ironically the best thing George Bush can do for democrats is what he's been doing. STAY THE COURSE. All we need to do is stand back and let him do the heavy lifting involved in turning the movement of this country back to the left.
What is crucial, critical and imperative is that no quarter be given. No free passes by democratic leadership, no breaking of the ranks by members. Given a millimeter of an opportunity the president's handlers will spin his way out of the web he's spun for himself. Or at the least find a palpable excuse to hide behind for anybody looking for one. If there is one thing americans love it's forgiving those favorites that have gone astray.
Far from being a losing strategy, obstructionism is the greatest weapon we have against this president. Because he will not, cannot admit to having been wrong even in the face of overwhelming evidence, Bush will be our greatest ally in the fight to get rid of him. His every speech sends more people to our coalition of the obvious. Every word he utters gives us more ammo to send right back at him. Kind of like Rick Santorum's book and herpes, George W. Bush's speeches are the gift that just keeps on giving.
So please don't apologize Mr. President. Just keep talking. I can't think of a better way to get rid of you and your pals faster.
