"Its the economy, stupid!"
"No, its medicare!"
"No! Its our standing in the world community!"
We all know these are the "real" issues. However, the republicans very rarely stick to the real issues when wedge issues work so well.
Slowly, far under the radar of the media, the Bushies and the Neo-Cons are laying the groundwork for culture war. And yours truely is about to get caught in the crossfire.
Over the past three years, there have been almost a dozen anti-queer initatives on state-wide ballots. Ignored in the media storm over the democratic canidates, the DOMA Constitutinal Amendment slouches toward a vote. Virgina, in direct oppisition to the Supremem court, seeks to reinstate a retooled version of their sodomy law.
Some of us refuse to be lulled into a false sense of complacency by reruns of Queer Eye and Boy Meets Boy. Once the field settles down a bit, perhaps following the conventions they WILL drop the bomb. Faith and Morality and Family, and all those things poor lil' ol faggoty me is such a danger to, will become the watchwords of the Republican plan of attack.
And I dont exactly exspect the democrats to leap to my aid (not that I need the help). Being seen as overly friendly with the evil, promiscuous fags and man-hating feminazi dykes is not an effective southern stratagy. Besides, our votes are already assured. We arent going to vote republican, are we?
This is just fair warning. The cluture war is coming and a few of us are gonna hafta dig into the trenches to protect what little we have gained. Keep focus on the economy, medicare, agriculture and trade policy. But dont forget that that some of us dont have the luxury of ignoring the more incindery and dangerous social issues.
