Nazgul35 just posted and deleted a diary about The Daily Show's treatment of the DNC chair selection. Several commenters remarked on what a waste of a diary it was; one in particular wrote
Delete this bitch now. I posted a
similar diary about this last night and received pretty much the same treatment.
I did not find The Daily Show's DNC hit piece funny in the least. It has nothing to do with expectations of partisanship on the part of TDS staff. I expect them to poke holes in all things political and where ever targets of opportunity present themselves.
But I don't find it funny to call Howard Dean, and by extension every Democrat or otherwise who supported or supports him, a loser. Not one fucking bit funny. The humor found in TDS's piece was based on perpetuating a stereotype of Dems as being losers. A one off declaration, yes, I would find funny. Wilfong's piece exploited every possible opportunity to paint the Democrats as socially inept, desperate, or just plain weird. From the treatment of David Leland and Donnie Fowler to the portrayal of Al Sharpton as a panhandler, it was a hit piece couched in comedic terms and built completely in the context of a right wing wet dream framework.
So go ahead, flame me, call me a whiner, give me a quarter to go buy a sense of humor, whatever you want to do. That will not change my opinion about that "comedy." I wasn't alone; the studio audience at the close of the piece was silent with a few muted boos. No laughter. It was not funny.
