Okay, that headline is meant to be sarcastic.
I called Biden's office today to see why he refused to sign Durbin's Dear Colleague letter. The response I received was that the letter calls for the White House to investigate itself on this matter, and therefore the letter has no weight -- the White House will never investigate itself, in other words. Of course, it wouldn't hurt for Biden to sign the letter; the staffer who answered the phone actually admitted that he could see no downside to Biden's signing. And yet Biden won't sign.
Anyone else surmise that Biden wants to have it both ways? He wants to be labeled a "firebrand," but then chickens out when it comes to actually putting his ass on the line. Biden wants to cover himself politically so he won't look like a loose cannon when voters consider his candidacy for president in 2008.
What a guy!
Anyway, be sure to let Biden's office know how much you admire his principled position on this issue.

Enjoy!
p.s. If anyone who reads this can think of another good reason for Biden to refuse signing the Durbin letter, I'm all ears. I'm certainly no expert on these issues; I'm just a voter who's fed up with the mealy-mouthed twits who continue to run my party into the ground.
