I diaried about the desperate need for a liberal/multicultural march on Washington before the Fall elections and I'm thrilled to see a march has been set for October 2nd.
However, a march is not enough. We need a VISION.
And my vision is this: "I Am the Real America!"
Think of this march in terms of IMAGES, not issues. IMAGES are what sway people right now. Images of hope:
Multiculturalism and the Democratic Party.
This is what gives us strength.
This is what helped build a coalition to elect Barack Obama, the belief that funny middle names and different skin colors and different religions do not make anyone less of a real American.
We must return to this basic concept.
We must remind people that the "other" is not to be feared. The "other" is what makes America so rich.
DIVERSITY.
Whites, blacks, Mexicans, Asians, Jews, athiests, gay people, immigrants, Christians, every group we have, each of them holding a sign: I am the REAL America!
Picture speaker after speaker at the lecturn talking about all the different ethnic groups, and how each of them are the "real America." Not just a white America. But a beautiful mosaic of faces that come together to believe in freedom and equality.
"They" want a white, Christian America only, and the rest of us to go back to the bus.
But we are what makes America great! DIVERSITY.
"The Million Americans March" -- What do you think?
Here was my diary from Sunday on this very issue:
