The average wage for employees born abroad is, in general, 2.000 Swedish Crowns less per month than for those born in Sweden. This might to a certain extent depend on wage discrimination but the findings of a new LO report show that the reasons appear to be, primarily, class, profession, sector and year of immigration.
LO Negotiating Secretary Erland Olauson on the report "Wages by Country of Origin says:
- Previous research has shown that immigrants are exposed to discrimination on the Swedish labour market. They have more difficulties in entering the labour market and are often too qualified for the jobs offered. The aim of this report was to find out if immigrants are discriminated against as regards wages as well.
Irrespective of country of origin, there are wage differences owing to, among other things, class and profession or sector of work. The majority of the employees born abroad are blue-collar workers.
