<identifying info snipped out>
I recently looked into teaching a night class at my local community college for non-English speakers to learn English. Turns out that the class is run by a Baptist church which I would have to join (The first question asked when I called was not about my education or training but "What church do you belong to?") before I could be involved in this class and was told "I would need to testify during the class" and "conduct a devotional" as "God brought these people to our country and now we're trying to help them have a relationship with God."
My question of "What makes you think they don't already have a relationship?" was dismissed with "This is what we do."
Now I didn't realize the day had come when I needed to join a church to get a job,
much less at a tax-payer funded institution like my local college.
Nor did I realize that in a class where we're just supposed to help them learn English would I be expected to disrespect their own religion and culture to promote someone else's.
I also don't think the teaching of 400-year-old English (such as that found in the King James Bible) which folks can't agree what it really means anyway is the best way to help a little Vietnamese lady learn to ask for more ice for her Coke.
But then.....I misunderstood the Republicans when they told me they'd give me free items for my class and then hit me up for $200 tshirts.
Maybe I'm the one who needs the English as a Second Language classes?
