In 2008, Senator Sam Brownback voted for the $200 billion bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Two years later, at the Kansas State Fair, Brownback insisted that he did not vote for this bail out. Brownback's staff continued to defend the Senator, refusing to acknowledge the 2008 vote.
This misinformation campaign by Senator Brownback and his staff was the focus of a front-page story in the Topeka Capital Journal on September 14th.
From the article:
"...Holland, the Democratic nominee, chastised the Republican U.S. senator from Topeka for backing a $200 billion bailout of two government-sponsored mortgage enterprises — Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae — that buckled under weight of risky subprime loan portfolios. . . It also raised the national debt to $10.6 trillion. . . It granted the U.S. Treasury Department authority to extend credit and buy stock to help Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Brownback did vote for it. Precisely Holland's point..."
It seems that Kansas' Senior Senator has been caught in a lie. Now the question remains - will he come clean?
The Holland campaign has posted a video of the entire exchange at the debate.
