(an open letter)
Dear Senator Boxer,
I am writing to unsubscribe from your PACForChange mailing list because I am disappointed in your support for Senator Lieberman in his primary race. He is someone who has worked against the ideals for which you stand at every turn, from 1994, when he opposed universal healthcare, to more recently in his votes to reconfirm Gonzales and his ilk. He destroys the party from within, whether by gleefully attacking it on Fox news, or by promising to confirm President Bush's judicial appointees, or by demanding that others provide cover for his fanciful views on Iraq.
Furthermore, when
confronted by non-traditional media asking for an explanation of a discrepancy between your position on Plan B and Sen. Lieberman's while campaigning with him in Connecticut, you insulted the intelligence of all those interested in the issue and simply lied. While I understand that many in Washington prefer the traditional Sunday talk-show format, wherein guests are lobbed pre-approved questions to which the response is almost invariably to repeat their party's talking points for the day, I expected more from you -- especially since you aspire to
use the interwebs to raise awareness of important issues and raise money for your chosen candidates.
So, please unsubscribe me from your list, and know that you have forfeited, in my heart and mind, any claim to principled leadership in the progressive community (though I believe you'll continue to make a fine footsoldier). I bet Sen. Lieberman is a nice guy, and I understand he went on the Freedom Rides 40 years ago. I'm sure he and his lovely big-pharma lobbyist wife throw wonderful cocktail parties, at which he probably has never once leeringly looked down your shirt. But I have no interest in receiving emails encouraging me to telephone my Senator about the Alito nomination, setting a timetable for Iraq, or opposing the "Child Custody Protection Act" (the subject of your latest missive), when you will take it upon yourself to fly across the country and actively campaign for a sitting Senator who undermines our common cause on these issues. The internet is no more a piggy bank than it is a dump truck, and actions speak louder than HTML.
Regards,
Pzinkpanther
