If "winning" in Iraq means that they have a democracy that works similar to ours, then we're home free.
With all of its focus on training the Iraqi military, the Bush administration is ignoring how incredibly successful they have been in developing a GOP-style democracy over there.
Rather than judging how successful we have been in Iraq on how well trained their military has become, we should measure how well they have adapted the workings of a Republican-led democratic government.
So, let's compare Iraq's democracy to our country's Republican democracy.
Do their political candidates exploit divisiveness within the electorate?
Do their top officials consult daily with their close religious advisors?
Do they elect officials that are corrupt and look for bribes?
Do their top officials isolate themselves from the public with no open public appearances?
Does the Iraqi government listen to corporate and religious leaders rather than to the Iraqi people?
Does their legislature/congress argue incessantly about nit picking religious and sectarian issues rather than create laws that might improve the health and welfare of the average Iraqi?
Do their courts make rulings based on religious texts?
Do their religious clerics endorse candidates and require their congregations to vote for those candidates?
Do they award no-bid contracts to large multi-national corporations that care more about their profit margins than about the work they do?
Does the government reimburse the press for publishing propaganda?
Does the government make it more difficult to vote in areas where the opposition resides?
Has the government demonstrated its ineffectiveness in securing its borders?
Does the government approve of the proliferation of handguns and rifles in the general population?
Even though 98% of countries have abolished the death penalty, does the new Iraq approve of the death penalty?
Is the government ineffective in stopping gang violence in urban areas?
There must be other signs of the burgeoning democracy over there. What are we waiting for? Pull out our troops - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
