In an article on his blog Informed Comment today, Professor Juan Cole lists Top Ten Horrible Things done to Us by Outgoing Sen. Joe Lieberman. Summarized below, Lieberman's egregious acts are arranged in a different order from 10 to 1 in the article, and there is more comment by Professor Cole.
Warmongering: Lieberman revived the ‘Committee on the Present Danger‘ in 2004 to fight the anti-war movement, keep the US in Iraq, and promote war on Iran. He joined the Neoconservative ‘Committee for the Liberation of Iraq’ in 2002 and since 2006 has repeatedly called for attacks on Iran by the US Air Force.
Wikileaks: He "intimidated Amazon" to cease allowing Wikileaks to be hosted on its servers and urged that Julian Assange be prosecuted for espionage. He also advocates prosecution of the New York Times for publishing US State Department cables Wikileaks gave to the NYT.
Separation of church and state: Joined with George W. Bush to give government money to religious organizations.
Health Care: "Deprived Democrats of the votes to pass a single-payer option universal health care law."
Sarah Palin: He defected to the Republicans in 2008, supported Sarah Palin for Vice-President, and said ‘everyone should listen to Sarah Palin.’
McCarthyite techniques: "Revived, with Lynn Cheney, McCarthyite techniques in order to harass and intimidate university professors who dared attempt to explain the historical and political context for the rise of al-Qaeda and its attacks on the United States. He even put out a blacklist of 40 university professors and administrators, including the President of Wesleyan University."
